How to Reset the Battery on Tesla Model X

The battery life of a Tesla Model X depends on a variety of factors, including the age of the battery, driving habits, weather conditions, and the type of driving being done. The Model X comes with different battery options, including a 75 kWh battery, a 100 kWh battery, and a 100 kWh Performance battery.
How to Reset the Battery on Tesla Model X

While Tesla batteries are known for their longevity, some owners have reported issues with the battery draining quickly or not charging fully.

Here are some approximate ranges for each battery option:

  1. 75 kWh battery: Approximately 237 miles (381 km) on a full charge.
  2. 100 kWh battery: Approximately 314 miles (506 km) on a full charge.
  3. 100 kWh Performance battery: Approximately 289 miles (465 km) on a full charge.

However, you can reset the 12V battery which is responsible for powering the vehicle's auxiliary systems such as the lights, touchscreen, and door locks. Here are the steps to reset the 12V battery:

  • Turn off the vehicle by putting it in Park and pressing the brake pedal.
  • Open the trunk (front trunk) of the vehicle.
  • Locate the 12V battery. It is usually located in the front of the frunk on the passenger side.
  • Disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal. Make sure to loosen the nut on the cable connector and carefully remove it from the battery terminal.
  • Wait for about 10 minutes to ensure that all of the vehicle's systems have shut down.
  • Reconnect the negative cable to the battery terminal and tighten the nut.
  • Close the frunk and start the vehicle.

After resetting the 12V battery, the vehicle may need some time to recalibrate and synchronize its systems. If you are experiencing any issues with the vehicle's main battery, it's best to contact a Tesla Service Center for guidance. They can diagnose the problem and provide specific steps on how to address the issue.

Turn off the vehicle by putting it in Park and pressing the brake pedal

To turn off the Tesla Model X, you should first put the vehicle in Park and then press the brake pedal to fully stop the vehicle. This will initiate the shutdown sequence, which will power off the vehicle's systems and enable you to exit the vehicle safely. Once the vehicle is fully powered off, you can proceed with disconnecting the negative cable from the 12V battery to perform the reset.

Open the frunk (front trunk) of the vehicle

you need to open the frunk (front trunk) of the Tesla Model X to access the 12V battery. Here are the steps to open the frunk: Ensure that the vehicle is in Park and the power is off. Locate the front trunk release button, which is typically located inside the vehicle near the driver's side footwell. Press the front trunk release button to unlatch the trunk. Walk to the front of the vehicle and locate the frunk handle, which is typically located just above the Tesla logo. Lift up on the frunk handle to open the frunk. Once the frunk is open, you can locate the 12V battery and proceed with disconnecting the negative cable to perform the reset.

Locate the 12V battery. It is usually located in the front of the frunk on the passenger side

To locate the 12V battery, you can follow these steps: Open the frunk of the vehicle using the steps provided earlier. Look for a rectangular-shaped black box in the front of the frunk on the passenger side. This is the 12V battery. If you're having trouble locating the battery, you can refer to the vehicle's owner's manual for specific instructions and illustrations.

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal. Make sure to loosen the nut on the cable connector and carefully remove it from the battery terminal

once you have located the 12V battery in your Tesla Model X, you can proceed with disconnecting the negative cable from the battery terminal to perform the reset. Here are the steps to do so: Identify the negative cable, which is typically marked with a "-" symbol. Use a wrench to loosen the nut on the cable connector that is attached to the negative battery terminal. Carefully remove the cable from the battery terminal by gently pulling it away. Make sure the disconnected cable is not touching any metal part of the vehicle, to prevent accidental contact and discharge of the battery. Wait for approximately 10 minutes to ensure that all of the vehicle's systems have shut down.
